Longer days and warmer temperatures mean that summertime has finally arrived! As schools are wrapping up the school year and kids are looking forward to summer break, parents are more than likely trying to figure out how to keep their kids busy for the next couple of months. SumnerOne’s Technology Expert, Rion Kolosieke joined Guy Phillips and the KTRS crew to talk about STEM camps for kids.
If you’re unsure of what STEM means, you’re not alone. STEM simply means: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Getting your kids interested in technology at an early age could give your child a leg up later in life by helping give them a solid foundation and understanding of technology that could lead to a career down the road. Rion mentioned that even now, the number of jobs far exceeds the number of college graduates.
Rion mentioned that just in the KTRS listening area, Washington University, Saint Louis University, SIUE and even local high schools are hosting STEM Camps for kids over the summer. There are even sleep away camps! Focus on finding a camp that builds on your child’s interests and strengths. For instance, if your child enjoys taking things apart and putting them back together, consider a robotics camp. And kids who enjoy reading are typically most engaged in coding. There are several great resources for finding the right camp for your young one over the summer. Take a look at Fun4Kids or Blueprint4Summer for a roundup of local camps in your area.
It’s never too early to start learning about technology and according to Rion, the kids who have no knowledge are typically the most engaged and have the most fun at learning. Guy even learned there are opportunities for adults to learn a few new STEM tricks at our local community and junior colleges. So you can teach an old dog new tricks!
