Machine learning is all around us these days. It's in the technology in our phones, cars, homes, offices, and more. Jeff Groby joined the Guy Phillips Show on The Big 550 KTRS for Tech Talk to shed some light on the in's and out's of machine learning. From Amazon Alexa all the way to advertisements that have been targeted for you, this technology has been woven into our everyday lives in the connected culture we live in.
What Is Machine Learning?
In the words of our IT expert, Jeff Groby, machine learning is a form of artificial intelligence that enables a system to learn from data rather than through explicit programming.
Two of the biggest machine learning technologies that pop into everyone's heads these days would be Amazon Alexa and Apple's Siri. Throughout the lifetimes of both of them have been a hot topic of discussion. Including making headlines from a popular television show all the way to a pet parrot being able to invoke the technology!
Machine learning isn't limited to personal assistants like Alexa and Siri though. As mentioned above, it's all around us. The technology is also in improving healthcare, personal security, generating recommendations, and countless other services. Machine learning is innovative technology, but it can also bring about trouble and worries.
Is Machine Learning a Good or Bad Thing?
As mentioned in the show, Jeff views machine learning as a tool that can be both good and bad. Just like with everything, there are positives and negatives. Machine learning can be used to make life simple when its used properly and it can be a bad thing when its taken advantage of.
Many aspects of machine learning were created with good intent like personal assistants like Alexa, and facial and voice recognition. As Jeff mentioned though, for every good story about machine learning there is an equally negative story. Deciding whether machine learning is a good or a bad thing is up to the user. Some people like the added privacy of trying to limit the technology, while others are open to the convenient aspects it has to offer. The decision is yours to make.
